Friday Files – the SKIN you’re in

Hello and happy Friday everyone. This week flew by for me, gearing up for New York Fashion Week I completely lost track of time and last night I realized I needed to come up with a fun and easy DIY art design to feature here on the Friday Files. I put out a request to my “twiends” on twitter and got a few great responses. (All of the suggestions/request will be but in queue, so thank you and stay tuned) My “twiend” @LaurenLoveLace requested a design featuring M.A.C Nail Lacquer in Skin.

I pulled some inspiration from two of my favorite nail artists Pattie Yankee and Robin Moses and got started. (I actually did two designs but I think I will just feature one today)

I started with 2 coats of Skin Nail Lacquer covering from the base of the nail bed and working down to the free edge of the nail. Meaning that I didn’t take the color all the way to the edge because I then used Quiet Time Nail Lacquer from the free edge and worked it up towards the middle of the nail. I wanted the Quiet Time lacquer to have a feathered or ripped effect so where the 2 polishes met was a bit uneven.

Then I placed the nails under the fan to let dry completely. If your polish is sticky or not dry all the way through this design will end up looking mushy and you will not get the best transfer.

I cut up some small pieces of newspaper (I used one I picked up from my trip to Israel this spring – Shabbat Shalom to all my fellow tribes people) Because that was a few months ago it was tough to get the print to transfer fully so I will say that using the newest newspaper on the driest nail will ensure the best result.

I dipped the small pieces of paper into a cup of alcohol for about 15 seconds. Then using tweezers I laid the paper across the nail where I had painted the Quiet Time lacquer. Using my finger to press the paper onto the nail for about 15-20 seconds. Then I gently peeled the paper away leaving an imprint of the paper on the edge of the nail.

To finish I used a small brush with Neon Pink Acrylic paint to trace the outline of the Quiet Time and the free edge of the nail. Then to seal in my design I applied top coat.

Let me see how you do – please post your photos on my new Nail Art Junkie Facebook page. (Oh yea and hit like while you are there :) )
